The standard practice of publishing results in scientific publications only at the end of the research process is changing with Open Science, which is an approach that focuses on spreading knowledge as soon as it is available, at any stage of the research workflow, using digital and collaborative technology. Open Science, Open Innovation and Open to the World form the three main policy goals for EU research and innovation, as set up in 2015. With the transition from Open Access to Open Science the research processes are more efficient, transparent, effective and so knowledge is easily accessible and shared, promoting innovation. Open Science refers to extending openness to the whole research cycle and products, and thus enabling sharing and collaboration as early as possible. It is often defined as an umbrella term that involves various movements, such as open access to publications, open research data, open source software, open collaboration, open peer review, open notebooks, open educational resources, open monographs, citizen science or research crowdfunding, even though and especially for the library and information domain, the focus is on Open Research Data and Open Access to scientific publications.
